WHERE DID PISS POOR COME FROM

Postby white wolf » Wed Feb 29, 2012 8:20 am

Where did piss poor come from?
NOW THIS IS A REAL EDUCATION
Us older people need to learn something new every day...
Just to keep the grey matter tuned up.

Where did "Piss Poor" come from? Interesting history.

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot.

And then once it was full it was taken and sold to the tannery...

if you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor".
But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot...

They "didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature
Isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be.

Here are some facts about the 1500's

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May,

And they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell,
brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.

Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water.

The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water,

Then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children.

Last of all the babies.

By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it.
Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!"

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath.

It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals
(mice, bugs) lived in the roof.

When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.
Hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs."
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.

This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings

Could mess up your nice clean bed.

Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection.

That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.

Hence the saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery
In the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing..

As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door,
It would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.
Hence: a thresh hold.

(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.

Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables
And did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers
In the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day.

Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while.

Hence the rhyme:

“Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special.

When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off.

It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon."

They would cut off a little to share with guests

And would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter.

Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death.

This happened most often with tomatoes,
so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status..

Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle,

and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky.
The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days.
Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial.
They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around
and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up.

Hence the custom; “holding a wake."

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people.

So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave.

When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realised they had been burying people alive.
So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.

Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be,
“saved by the bell" or was "considered a dead ringer."

And that's the truth.

Now, whoever said history was boring!!!

I LOVEEEEEEEEEEE History !!!
that was soooooo good thanks WW...where did you find that lot?

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May,

:stink: stinky stinky phewy

the bath water one was a goodun...
Growing up in Northern UK back in the late 50's early 60's I remember that one well..
Every Sunday night mum would haul up the big tin tub and put it infront of the fire...
the order was a bit different than you decribed though..
dad would be first then mum, then my baby brother then my other brother, and I was always last
I remember it was always a Sunday because the "Black and White Minstrel Show" was always on. :scared:
Thank God those days are long gone.

it's large and deep enough to fit 4 people in it to make it into a hot tub !!
and the old 44 gallon drum washing machine with the hand wind roller ringer
on top of it !! and the best of all the old grey coloured CHAMBERLIN tractor
1920's that still runs a treat !!
history we are still learning from it and things were built to last and
remedies used back then are still use today !!

Wow nice topic WW,
i was thinking of a few words the other day and wondered how they originated, some awesome info in there. Cheers

Also Budduh
My partner wendy spent the first 12 yrs of life on a farm with no electricity. Using stuff like cast iron baths, washboards, chillboxes, ploughs. One thing she says she hated was trying to eat dinner at night with a lantern, and constantly had moths flying in it.
Might not think it anything too special, but we are only 25 so it was around 99-01 that they were still doing it, but has made her a very resourceful women.

WOW good post WW
I remember having to share the bath water as well, though it was only between us kids and oldest went first... I was the lucky one

I love the old canopy beds and there are actually two different ways from different parts of the world that they came about, one was to stop animals and droppings from dropping on the bed, the other was way back when nobility shared the same sleeping area as servants and they hung curtains for privacy...

Don't remember those Janet, though have come across a few of these old Thunder Box toilets when travelling out bush to the old ... old...abandoned towns and mining leases.
This one is the luxury model, it has a door on it :histerics:

This brings us to another thing to do with the dunny... RED BACKS
Though I have had the misfortune one night of sitting on a loo with little frogs living in it and that was not nice when one jumped and landed where it shouldn't!!!!!!

bee's wax candles (home made) and the best was with Hercules the Clydesdale
horse walking with grandpa behind Hercules all strapped up to pull the plow
so it was ready to put the seeds in !! oh they were they days of fun and
adventure !!

True that james, i know our generation (80's) was lucky etc, but hell i pity the newer generations, my best mates lil girl had a tv and dvd player at 2.5yrs...I was 15 when i got my first TV, and that wasnt cause we were doin it tough, it was just what my parents thought morally. We have taken in our 17yr old nephew (90's kid) and OMFG. No morales, no respect, no understanding of anything, no work ethic, and its not just him
Anyways sorry getting off topic but, today is a throw away world, no value in anything anymore.

Im sure that chamberlin tractor will be running strong for another 50yrs

Good topic too WW could happily read more like that.Cheers

Don't apologise GRIM P.I, I happen to agree with you even if it is off topic. My kids are about your age and they even say the same thing.
Something has gone seriously wrong somewhere.... probably when the united nations said that parents couldn't punish their kids... but I won't go there.

Back to topic....
Milk in little bottles at recess at school... in the UK they had to put them near the heater so they were thawed out enough to drink in winter

I remember that too.

i have never asked anything from my country i have never claimed for anything and ive been working since 16 years old to support myself and my family ,even tho im no longer living there i still do this and i get treated like bad person ,i have served my country also of which im proud of yet im concidered a bad father and husband.

I used to think fathers for justice were a bunch of jerks but now i totally support them as i want justice.

Also my children may never wear a uniform to defend their country but they will damn well respect all those who have and do.

Yeah ww totally true, i wish i had more sense as a younger lad, cause now i would enrol in the ADF or police, but cant afford to loose out on money with my bills etc which sucks. i left a big rant about that on facebook. I believe that everyone on completion of school should serve for 2 years unless they have a apprenticeship or are going to uni. And able bodied people that dont work after so long instead of doin work for the dole should be serving in the ADF.

It would crank most of theese disrespectdul youngsters into line, and china and vietnam etc do it, so when you think that most asain males you see that have imigrated here, have atleast 2 years in survival and combat etc. so when we have basically the most desireable country around it would be a good plan for every male to be ready.

Also not racist i just hate everyone equally lol. Sorry guy might make this a seperate topic lol.

WW you should try and find some aussie slang origins for everyone.
